THE PERCH, A HISTORIC LOG CABIN IN THE OZARKS
The Perch is a log cabin sitting on a little lake just outside the community of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The small cabin has a square plan with a hip roof and windows that almost completely encircle the structure, giving it a resemblance to classic forest fire lookout towers.
The cabin was built in the 1920s. Its main structural support consists of corner posts and several intermediate posts holding up the roof. The posts are infilled with sections of short logs stacked horizontally above and below the windows, and stood vertically between them.

The logs are exposed on the inside and most of the other surfaces are finished with fairly dark wood as well, making for a rustic but somewhat dim interior. Despite all the windows, daylight entering the cabin is limited by its steep north-facing hillside and the nearby trees.
The cabin is roughly 600 ft2 (56 m2). The entry door leads into the full kitchen on the uphill side. The one bedroom is in the opposite corner, through the door with the stained glass at the other end of the kitchen. To the right is a combined living/dining room facing the lake.

The claw foot tub at the living room’s far end lets you literally soak in the view. If privacy is needed, the tub area can be separated with a curtain that pulls across the room. You also have the option of a shower in the small bathroom to the left of the tub. There is a loft over the bathroom that seems to be used for storage but could possibly be used for sleeping as well.

A wraparound deck makes a great place to take in views of the lake and watch for local wildlife. Unfortunately it looks like the only access to the deck is the main entry door. It would be nice to have doors leading directly from the living area to the deck. Note the tree and leaf cut-outs in the railing. Although here the use was limited, an affordable and attractive guard rail could be made with just decoratively-sawn boards instead of posts and spindles.
The Perch would be a great base from which to explore the historic Eureka Springs and the surrounding Ozark Mountains. It can be rented through Airbnb.
